The cherry blossoms have started to bloom! In Japan, the new school and business year begins in April, so cherry blossoms are closely associated with the start of a new chapter in life.
I often see this at shopping malls around town — a springtime display where people write their hopes and resolutions for the new school or work year on cherry blossom–shaped cards, and then fill an entire wall with pink petals. 🌸
This time, I’d like to share a few messages that caught my eye! Enjoy not only the words themselves, but also the beauty of real handwritten Japanese.
It looks like the writer wanted to say, “I want to be a cute first grader.” The way they wrote the “ne” in hiragana is quite creative, but you can really feel their sentiment. Don’t worry — all first graders are adorable, after all!
“My fifth-grade teacher is a good one.”
Quite a realistic perspective from an elementary student! That probably means their fourth-grade teacher was a “miss” (lol). Elementary teachers spend a lot of time with their students, so they can really shape the year ahead. Reading this brought back memories of my own school days.
“When I become a fifth grader, I want to really focus on supporting my favorite idols.”
But… why do they have to wait until fifth grade to give it their all? 😅
“Since we never know when we’ll die, let’s play to our heart’s content and enjoy games while we still can.”
I just hope this boy isn’t seriously ill…
“I want to become an idol.”
If an idol came from my hometown, I’d definitely cheer them on! 🎉
“I want to have the cutest girlfriend in the world.”
To respect their privacy, I’ve blacked out the name. I think it’s wonderful to have big dreams! 🎵 Just make sure to put in the effort to match them
“I hope I get better at using my smartphone.”
I imagine this person might be an older adult struggling with their device. There are many seniors who assume it’s too late to learn and just leave the tasks to younger people… but it’s inspiring to see someone like this who keeps their desire to learn alive.
May everyone stay healthy and bloom beautifully in their own place!
…Well, that’s a clever way to put it! 😄
