先日、スペイン語学習者向けのポッドキャストを聞いていたら
（プロフィールには書いてありますが、私は英語、スペイン語を勉強中です）

若い美男美女とデートができる レンタル彼氏・彼女 というのもありますが、
そちらは指名の多い人気のある人だと1時間一万円以上するので、
おっさんレンタルはかなりリーズナブルですよね！
おっさんレンタルに登録するおっさんは
面接をクリアしなければなりませんが、運営者は（この方もおっさん）
人の役に立ちたいという熱意を感じられる人を採用しているそうです
そんなおっさんへの依頼はというと、雑談、愚痴、相談系が
7割を占め、しかも女性からの申し込みのほうが多いんだとか！
人生経験も豊富で、仕事における知識もある世のおっさん達ですが
相手の話をよく聞かずに結論を言おうとしたり、求めてもいないのに
アドバイスしてきたり、上から目線で意見してくるなど
若い世代から嫌われたり、煙たがられる人も多いです

The other day, I was listening to a podcast for Spanish learners
(as it says in my profile, I’m studying English and Spanish),
and guess what came up as a topic?
Japan’s very own “Ossan Rental” service!
It made me chuckle and think, “Is this really the image people abroad have of Japan…?”
But since it caught my interest, I figured I might as well dig a little deeper
— and share it with the rest of the world.
So, what exactly is an ossan?
In this context, it usually means a man in his late 30s to early 60s —
and typically not the kind who’s considered conventionally attractive.
And “Ossan Rental” is a service where you can rent such an ossan
for 1,000 yen per hour.
It’s been around for twelve years now,
and apparently there are about seventy ossan members across Japan.
There are also services where you can rent a young, attractive boyfriend or girlfriend for a “date.”
But those popular hires — the ones who get a lot of requests — can cost over 10,000 yen per hour.
Compared to that, Ossan Rental is definitely budget-friendly!
Men who want to register as an ossan have to pass an interview.
According to the organizer (who is also an ossan himself),
he chooses applicants who genuinely show a desire to help others.
As for what people request from these ossan,
about seventy percent of the jobs involve chatting, venting, or asking for advice —
and, interestingly, most of the clients are women!
Men in this age group usually have plenty of life experience and professional knowledge.
But many of them tend to jump to conclusions without really listening,
offer advice no one asked for,
or speak in a condescending way —
and that’s why younger generations often find them annoying or hard to deal with.
I’m sure you know at least one person like that!
But the ossan in this service understand something important:
when someone says, “I want your advice,”
what they often mean is actually,
“I just need someone to listen to me.”
The more you learn about it,
the more you realize it’s actually a pretty wonderful service.

If someone catches your eye, you click to read their profile and details.
And once you find the ossan you want,
you add him to your cart and proceed to checkout…
It felt so much like shopping on Amazon that I couldn’t help laughing.
By the way, there’s even an app on the App Store
where an AI ossan will listen to you.
It even supports seven languages in addition to Japanese,
so I can’t help wondering—
maybe people in other countries can use it too…?
