The English translation is below

About a month ago, I talked about the new 1,000-yen note,

and today it’s time for part two—the 10,000-yen bill.

The older notes are still far more common, but the new ones are gradually starting to feel less novel.

The new 10,000-yen note features Eiichi Shibusawa,

a key figure involved in the founding or support of about 500 companies

and roughly 600 educational and public institutions.

Among the well-known organizations that still exist today are

Tokyo Gas, the Tokyo Stock Exchange, JR East, and the Imperial Hotel,

just to name a few.

He also placed great importance on education,

playing a major role in the establishment and development of institutions such as Hitotsubashi University—one of Japan’s most prestigious universities.

And—this part is especially noteworthy—he strongly advocated for women’s education as well,

contributing to the founding and growth of schools like Japan Women’s University.

For a man born in 1840, his ideas were remarkably forward-thinking.

I can’t help feeling a little smitten.

On the reverse side, the design features the Marunouchi building of Tokyo Station,

a red-brick station beloved by locals.

The 1,000-yen note also had a hologram, but this one comes with a luxurious vertical 3D hologram.

It’s said that the patterns appear differently depending on the angle,

and this is reportedly the first time such technology has been applied to a banknote anywhere in the world.

Honestly, I don’t really feel the need to look at it from every possible angle…

One thing that personally amazed me is that he lived to be 91 years old in that era!

Apparently, this photo was taken just two months before he passed away,

and you can really see the kindness in his face.

Even after his death, many people expressed their gratitude, praised the way he lived,

and continued to pay their respects—there seemed to be no end to it.

That said, it’s hard to imagine today, but back then the laws regarding family and marriage

weren’t fully established, and he reportedly had children in various places.

Including both official and unofficial children, the number is said to have been between 50 and 100.

Quite a scale! Could that have been the secret to his longevity?
