In my previous post, I mentioned that I started running about two years ago. ♪
WHY?! Even though I’d hated sports ever since elementary school!
After I finished being a student and no longer had PE classes,
I spent my life actively avoiding sports altogether!!
This time, as a bit of a side story, I’d like to share why I ended up doing something so completely opposite to who I used to be.
If, like me, you don’t have fond memories of PE classes during compulsory education, this might especially resonate with you.
It’s not that I was terrible at sports — I was always somewhere in the middle, usually a 3 out of 5.
But summer was too hot, winter was too cold, so outdoor sports were out of the question.
Even indoors, big balls were a no.
In volleyball, all you get from receiving the ball is sore arms.
And basketball? I just don’t have the kind of aggressiveness it takes to go after a ball someone else is holding.
I also prefer to avoid physical contact, so I’d wander around behind the other team, trying my best to look like I was participating…
More often than not, I’d jam a finger on the very first day, which meant sitting out the basketball unit for a while —
and honestly, I felt relieved. (laughs)
As for dodgeball, that’s practically bullying.
Once I graduated, I was finally free from PE, and I went on to live a life completely unrelated to sports.
And then, time passed…
Spring 2020.
A new coronavirus spread rapidly across the world.
I live with my parents, and as the pandemic dragged on, we became more and more hesitant to go out for fear of infection.
Both of them gradually became physically inactive.
It was the time when messages like
“Older adults should avoid non-essential outings”
were everywhere, after all.
Around that time, my mother suddenly said,
“I want a treadmill.”
So I picked out one that looked decent on Amazon and ordered it
(of course, she paid for it).
Autumn 2022.
We bought a running machine.
Little did I know that this machine, which cost around ¥30,000 including tax, would later change my life — and become something I simply couldn’t do without.
But when we had just bought it, the novelty wore off quickly.
At first, I only used it for walking, and only when I felt like it.
I had no intention of buying running shoes, either.
Still, one important thing had changed:
the environment was there — I could run anytime, if I wanted to.
When it comes to starting something new, having a low barrier to entry really matters.
This is worth emphasizing.
So, what was the trigger that finally got me running?
That’s for the next episode!
P.S. I’ve always been on the slim side, so this wasn’t about dieting.
