At long last, my Detective Conan movie marathon has come to an end!
Unlike a real marathon, there was no physical hardship involved, but I can’t say I felt much of a sense of accomplishment either. (LOL)
Still, watching the movies, along with selected episodes of the TV series to catch up on the background, little by little became one of my favorite evening activities over those four months, from May through August.
Now, let’s take a look at the box office rankings of the Detective Conan movies.
Over the past three years, each film has comfortably surpassed ¥10 billion at the box office, with some even breaking the ¥15 billion mark.
Released every April, the annual Conan movie has increasingly become a major national event in Japan, something pretty much everyone knows about.
And naturally, I found myself wanting to join in the fun.
I used to watch the TV series years ago, so I figured there wouldn’t be any problem with simply watching the movies in chronological order…
How naive I was!!
Thirty years of Detective Conan history, it turns out, aren’t so easy to catch up on after all…
2024 – Movie 27: The Million-dollar Pentagram
A warning notice arrives at the Onoe family’s estate in Hakodate, Hokkaido, from the Phantom Thief Kid, announcing his intention to steal a Japanese sword associated with Toshizo Hijikata. Conan and Heiji, who happen to be in Hakodate for a kendo tournament, join the pursuit of Kid. Meanwhile, a murder takes place involving another sword. As the search for a hidden treasure supposedly concealed by the Onoe family unfolds, a mysterious swordsman and arms dealers also enter the picture, turning it into a fierce treasure hunt.
Heiji fails to confess his feelings yet again!
This was by far the most memorable part of the movie for me. (Sigh…)
It’s not like he’s proposing marriage, so I wish he wouldn’t put so much pressure on himself to outdo Shinichi’s legendary Big Ben confession! This time, he actually managed to get his feelings across, which was quite a step forward. Unfortunately, the punchline was that Kazuha didn’t hear a word of it. (Sigh…)
But honestly, what was even more overwhelming was the sheer number of characters popping up in the movie. During my TV-series catch-up sessions, I’d only seen some of them once, and suddenly there they all were!
There was Aoko, who looks just like Ran; Inspector Nakamori, who looks just like Kogoro; and Okita, who looks just like Shinichi. Wait, who was he again?!
I was completely lost.
On top of the familiar Kansai gang, including Heiji, Kazuha, and, of course, the lovely young Lady Momiji ♡, characters from an entirely different manga series casually show up and play a part in the story.
At that point, I was ready to give up on solving the mystery altogether!
And then, just when I thought things couldn’t get any more complicated, the movie ended with the revelation that Kid’s father was actually still alive!
How on earth is he going to make his way back into the story?!
We also learned that Shinichi and Kid are cousins. Perhaps their similar taste in women is simply a matter of DNA!
2025 – Movie 28: One-Eyed Flashback
Inspector Kansuke Yamato of the Nagano Prefectural Police is caught up in a shooting incident in the snowy mountains. Ten months later, the parabolic antenna at the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan is attacked, bringing Kogoro and the others to Nagano to investigate. The memories of the one-eyed man left behind in the snowy mountains and a case from the past gradually come together, revealing the truth behind the mystery.
Sorry, but this was my first encounter with the Nagano police team. I hadn’t watched any of their episodes in preparation!
For longtime viewers, this may have been a long-awaited moment. But for me, it felt more like suddenly being dropped into a conversation about the past between a bunch of people I’d never met before.
While watching those three, I kept thinking things like:
“Why does this guy keep randomly muttering about Romance of the Three Kingdoms?! He’s not even bothering to explain what he’s talking about, and the other person is completely left out of the loop!”
And apparently, it’s not just high school students who struggle to be honest about their feelings toward their childhood friends. Grown adults do it too?!
Rather than feeling like a Detective Conan movie, this came across more as a feature-length Nagano police drama with Conan making a guest appearance!
Apparently, this year’s movie, Fallen Angel of the Highway, also puts the Kanagawa Prefectural Police front and center. Even if I’d watched it, I suspect I wouldn’t have felt particularly invested in the story either…
What I Learned from Watching All 28 Detective Conan Movies
The earlier movies were largely designed to be enjoyed as standalone stories, even if you hadn’t watched the TV series. In recent years, however, they seem to have evolved into major annual events for longtime fans.
With 30 years of TV episodes and manga storylines now being brought into the movie theater, you’d better be prepared for a certain level of “longtime fans only” territory!
Here’s the overall trend I noticed after watching all 28 movies:
- The early movies were relatively self-contained and could be enjoyed on their own.
- Gradually, the connections to the TV series and manga became stronger.
- Popular characters began taking on leading roles in the movies.
- In recent years, knowing the characters’ backstories and relationships has become almost essential.
- As a result, longtime fans get an absolute treat, but the movies have become harder to follow for those returning after a long break.
- Even so, the movies have become increasingly spectacular in terms of action and visual effects. Explosions are practically a trademark, but don’t worry — the characters are safe! ♪
If you’re planning to start watching the Conan movies from the beginning, I strongly recommend alternating between the movies and the TV series!
Just as I did, you can ask AI to pick out the essential episodes to watch beforehand. Simply having seen a character once and recognizing their face isn’t enough to develop any real attachment to them.
It goes without saying that the more time you invest in the TV series, the more you’ll get out of the movies!
Six Months Later…
In September, a special two-hour TV episode titled The 30th Case aired to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Detective Conan anime.
I figured it would eventually become available on Amazon, so I decided to skip it for the time being. My mother, however, happened to turn on the TV and start watching it.
The special was promoted as featuring “the entire cast,” but my mother, who used to watch Conan occasionally back in the day, soon gave up because she couldn’t follow the story at all.
When she looked at the promotional illustration in the newspaper and tried to identify the characters, the only ones she recognized were Conan, Kogoro, and Inspector Megure. (LOL)
Well, no wonder she couldn’t keep up!
…But then again, just six months ago, I was in exactly the same position. (Sigh…)
Over these past six months, I’ve gone from being someone completely left out of the loop to someone who now understands quite a bit of what’s going on. Even so, six months of catching up at an accelerated pace can never compare to thirty years of following the series in real time. I’ll never be as emotionally invested in the Conan universe as those who’ve been fans for all thirty years.
Then, in October, Heiji finally succeeded in confessing his feelings to Kazuha in the TV series!!
It wasn’t some cool, perfectly executed romantic confession. Instead, Kazuha happened to overhear him talking to himself. (LOL)
Even so, when I watched him finally get a proper chance to confess, I found myself thinking, “H-Heiji!!!” — and nearly tearing up.
That’s when I realized: Ah, so this is what enjoying Detective Conan is all about!
For thirty years, one of the real pleasures for longtime fans must have been sharing all those tiny steps forward with the characters, laughing and crying along with them as their stories unfolded. This time, I felt like I’d finally managed to become a small part of that experience myself.
The Black Organization is still shrouded in mystery, and I imagine Detective Conan will continue for many more years.
I simply can’t die before seeing how it all ends!!
I’ll keep following the essential episodes of the TV series and look forward to every new development, celebrating the happy moments and agonizing over the setbacks along the way!
When will Kid and Shinichi finally find out they’re cousins? And what about Inspector Takagi and Detective Sato — are they ever going to get married?!
It’s wonderful to have something to look forward to for years to come. ♪
