私ごとですが、去年の１２月２３日、
家に帰る途中でパスケースを落としてしまいました
電子マネーの交通系カードが2枚が入っていて、
使おうと思えば誰でも使えます
クリスマス前になんてこった、でも買い直すのは年明けでいいか〜
と思っていたら。。。
今年になってから、警察に届けられていると知りました！！
図書館のカードも入っていたので、警察→図書館→私へと
華麗なる連携プレーでつながったのです！
その時の私の心は。。
さすが日本！ 落とした財布が戻ってくる国！！
。。。といっても60％くらいだそうですが
世界的には確率は高い方だと言われていますね
日本では落し物を見つけたら、身近な交番などに届けます
交番とは駅近くなどの場所に、わりとフレンドリーな警察官が
交代で24時間いる所です。このシステムは日本独自らしいです！
そして最終的に警察署で3ヶ月間保管されます
落し物を拾った人は、７日以内に届ければ
落とし主が現れたとき、お礼として落とし物の
5〜20％に相当する額を受け取ることができます
そして3ヶ月たっても現れない場合は、身分証明書や
クレジットカードなど、個人情報が含まれるもの以外は
自分のものにできます。もちろん放棄もできますが。
というわけで警察署に取りに行ってきました！
何ひとつ欠けることなく、カード類もそのまま入っています
でも、拾った方は お礼はいらないと 名前も連絡先も告げずに
去っていったという。。。カッコ良すぎる。。。
1人の人間を幸せ気分にしたこと、拾ってくれた方はきっと
知らないのでしょうね

無事に私のところに戻ってきました

届けたことはあるのですけど、もちろんこれからも

A little personal story: On December 23rd of last year, I lost my pass case on my way home.
Inside were two transit IC cards with e-money on them—basically, anyone could have used them if they wanted to.
I remember thinking, “Of all times, right before Christmas… Oh well, I’ll just buy new ones after the New Year.”
But then…
Then earlier this year, I found out that someone had turned it in to the police!
Since my library card was also inside, the police contacted the library, and the library contacted me—
a perfect relay play worthy of a gold medal.
And my reaction at that moment was simply:
Yaaaay!!
As expected of Japan—the country where even lost wallets make their way back to you!
…Well, the return rate is actually only around 60%, but that’s still considered pretty high by global standards.
In Japan, when someone finds a lost item, they usually take it to the nearest kōban, a small neighborhood police box.
These are staffed around the clock by friendly officers—something that seems to be unique to Japan!
After that, the item is transferred to the main police station, where it’s kept for three months.
If the person who finds the lost item turns it in within seven days, they’re entitled to receive a reward from the owner—usually between 5% and 20% of the item’s value.
And if the owner doesn’t show up within three months, the finder is allowed to keep the item, except for things that contain personal information such as ID cards or credit cards.
Of course, they can choose to decline it as well.
So I went to the police station to pick it up!
Everything was still there—every single card just as I’d left it.
But the person who found it didn’t want any reward, left no name, no contact information… and simply walked away.
How cool is that?
The person who picked it up probably has no idea that they made someone’s whole day.
Thanks to them, my little yellow pass case of happiness made its way safely back to me.

I’ve actually found and turned in wallets or pass cases a couple of times myself, and of course, I’ll keep doing it—
if I ever spot one again, I’ll hand it in without hesitation!
