2026年6月、ガッツ石松さんは肺炎のため76歳で亡くなりました
追悼の意を込めて、当時の記事を読み返しながら
最後に少しだけ今の思いを追記しました
４月１１日は「ガッツポーズの日」です
1974年のこの日に、ボクシングWBCライト級タイトルマッチで
ガッツ石松（本名・鈴木ゆうじ）がチャンピオンの ロドルフォ
ゴンザレスと対戦し、K O勝利！その際、両手をあげて喜びを表した
ガッツ石松の姿を、新聞記者が「ガッツポーズ」と表現したことから
広く知られるようになりました
「勝った！」「やった〜‼︎」「上手く行った‼︎」時などに
自然と出てしまうポーズです。でもスポーツの世界において
敗者の前でのガッツポーズは、思いやりのない礼節に欠けた
行為とみなされるため、禁止されていることも多いです
海外でも、フランス、ブラジル、パキスタンなどでは
相手を侮辱する意味になったりするみたいですね
ただ、ガッツポーズそのものよりも、今回取り上げたいのは
生みの親、ガッツ石松の伝説の方です（笑）
プロレスラーの傍ら、TVドラマや映画、バラエティ番組などでも
活躍しました！格闘技に全く興味はなくても、個性的な
キャラクターでたくさんのファンに支持されています
今はもう、75歳というお年のせいかメディアに出てくる機会も
滅多にないようですが、私もずいぶん楽しませてもらいました
それでは、ガッツ伝説をご紹介します！
♢クイズ番組で「太陽が昇るのはどっち？」と聞かれ「右」
♢さらに「クリスマスは誰の誕生日でしょう？」
には「七面鳥」
♢「我々は（われわれは）〜」を「ががは〜」と読み
「NG」を「んぐ」と読む
♢「YOSHIKIが属しているバンドは？」 「X バツ！」
。。。エックスですって
♢昔、ネコという名前の猫を飼っていた
♢ディズニーシーに行った時
「デズニーAとデズニーBはどこにあんの？」
♢急ぎの時は、電車の先頭に乗る
♢「能あるタカは？」 「アタマがデカい！」
。。。爪を隠すです
♢喫茶店で隣の客が「コーヒー、ブラックで下さい」と言うと
「じゃあ、俺、ホワイト」
♢北斗七星の位置を聞かれて
「この辺の者じゃないから。。。」近所のことを聞いてません
♢「私はね、ボクシングに出会ってから人生観が
360度変わったんです」 一周しちゃった！
♢「その時、俺思ったんだ。大人になって、働いて
最初にもらった金で腹一杯バナナを食おうってな。
でもな、うまいのは最初の20本までだなぁー！」
♢飛行機での「ベルトをお締め下さい」のアナウンスに
「今はもう、チャンピオンじゃないから」と言って
ベルト着用拒否！

♢俺は天然じゃない。作っている。
◆ガッツ石松さんは、日本人として初めてライト級の世界チャンピオンになり
その後5度の防衛に成功したボクシング界のレジェンドです
でもなぜか「元世界王者」より「面白い人」のイメージが
先に来る珍しい人でした。ボクシングの実績もすごいのに
お茶の間の人気者としても成功した人でした
ビバ・ガッツの歌にもあるように
『そんなガッツよ〜
これからも伝説を作ってくれ〜』とみんな思っていたのに．．．
ガッツさんの所属事務所も、こんなコメントをしていました
『ガッツポーズをするたびに、ガッツ石松を想い出して
いただければ幸いです。 OK牧場！』

In June 2026, Guts Ishimatsu passed away from pneumonia at the age of 76.

April 11 is Guts Pose Day!
On this day in 1974, Guts Ishimatsu (real name: Yuji Suzuki) fought against the champion Rodolfo Gonzalez
in the WBC Lightweight Boxing Title Match — and won by knockout!
When he raised both hands in celebration, a newspaper reporter described his gesture as a “Guts Pose,”
and that’s how it became widely known.
It’s a pose that naturally comes out when you think,
“Victory!” “Yes!” or “It worked!”
However, in the world of sports, doing a Guts Pose in front of the loser
is often considered disrespectful and lacking in sportsmanship,
so it’s frequently prohibited.
It seems that in some countries, like France, Brazil, and Pakistan,
doing the pose can be interpreted as insulting the opponent.
But more than the Guts Pose itself, what I really want to highlight this time
is the legend of its creator, Guts Ishimatsu! (lol)
Alongside his wrestling career, he also appeared in TV dramas, movies, and variety shows!
Even if you have no interest in martial arts, his unique personality has won him a large fanbase.
Nowadays, at the age of 75, he rarely appears in the media,
but I’ve enjoyed watching him over the years.
So now, let me introduce the legend of Guts!
♢ On a quiz show, he was asked, “Which way does the sun rise?” and answered, “Right.”
♢ When asked, “Whose birthday is Christmas?” he said, “Turkey.”
♢ He reads “我々は (wareware wa)” as “gagaha~” and “NG” as “ngu.”
♢ “Which band does YOSHIKI belong to?” — his answer: “X, cross!” …It’s actually X Japan.
♢ He once had a cat named “Neko.”
♢ On a visit to DisneySea, he asked, “Where are Disney A and Disney B?”
♢ When in a hurry, he rides at the very front of the train.
♢ Asked, “What about a talented hawk?” he answered, “Its head is big!” …Actually, it’s supposed to be “talented people hide their claws.”
♢ At a café, when the person next to him said, “Coffee, black please,” he replied, “Then I’ll have white.”
♢ When asked the location of the Big Dipper, he said, “I’m not from around here…” — they weren’t asking about your neighborhood!
♢ “You know, ever since I discovered boxing, my outlook on life has… changed 360 degrees.” — Wait, that’s a full circle!
♢ “At that moment, I thought, I’ll grow up, start working,
and eat my fill of bananas with my first paycheck.
But, you know, the best part is only the first 20!”
♢ On a plane, when the announcement said, “Please fasten your seatbelt,”
he replied, “I’m not a champion anymore,” and refused to buckle up!

Guts Ishimatsu was a boxing legend who became the first Japanese fighter to win a world lightweight title and successfully defended it five times.
Yet somehow, he was one of those rare people who were known more as an entertaining and lovable personality than as a former world champion. Despite his remarkable achievements in boxing, he also became a beloved figure in Japanese households through television and popular culture.
As the song “Viva Guts” goes:
“That’s our Guts…
Please keep creating new legends…”
I think many of us felt exactly that way.
Guts Ishimatsu’s talent agency also shared this message:
“We would be delighted if people remember Guts Ishimatsu whenever they strike a Guts pose.
