Let’s keep the marathon going! ♪

Around this point, I found myself humming the movie’s theme song whenever the title appeared on screen.

Movie 7 (2003): Crossroad in the Ancient Capital

Conan heads to Kyoto to investigate a series of murders. As the mystery of a stolen Buddhist statue becomes intertwined with the legend of Yoshitsune, Heiji searches for his first love while closing in on the truth behind the case.

Since Kyoto is the setting, this movie seems to be especially popular with locals and people who love the city. But as someone from the Kanto region, I felt a bit left behind because there were so many places and local references I didn’t recognize. On top of that, there was a detective carrying a squirrel around, which kept distracting me… I just couldn’t give the actual mystery my full attention!

The first thing that caught my attention was Heiji.

Whenever he has a chance to visit Kyoto, he brings along a little drawstring pouch containing a crystal, hoping he’ll finally meet his first love again. The idea of “If I happen to run into her, I’ll give it to her” feels straight out of a shojo manga. But using a magazine interview as an excuse just to track her down? That was starting to feel less romantic and more… a little scary!

It was subtly revealed earlier that Haibara had brought medicine for Professor Agasa, but apparently she’d also been carrying the medicine for Shinichi all along. I can’t deny it—I was cheering, “Shinichi is finally here!!” when he showed up near the end.

I really liked the reveal that the layout of the temples formed the kanji 「玉」 (“jewel”). It was a clever moment where Conan’s deduction and the big reveal came together perfectly.

That said, this was also around the point where I started thinking, “Again?” when the female characters ended up being taken hostage. It was beginning to feel like a recurring pattern.

And I couldn’t help laughing when Ran—who’s usually so thoughtful and put-together—used the same handkerchief from the previous day… without even washing it first!

Movie 8 (2004): Magician of the Silver Sky

As Kaito Kid sets his sights on a precious gem, Conan and the others board a passenger plane bound for Hakodate. But when a murder takes place on board and both pilots become unable to fly the aircraft, the situation turns into a full-scale in-flight emergency. Teaming up with Kid, Conan must do everything he can to save the passengers.

This felt less like a murder mystery and more like an airplane disaster movie.

One thing that really made me laugh, though—Kid actually asked Ran for her measurements. Does anyone still do that these days? It came across like something a creepy middle-aged guy would say, and it definitely shows the movie’s age.

At first I thought Kid was about to save only himself by escaping from the crashing plane. But instead, he used police cars as runway lights! Sure, they were lined up a little too perfectly, but I’ll let that slide. I really like how he always knows exactly what role he needs to play and acts on it without hesitation. That’s one of the things that makes him so cool. ♡

Ran, believing she was about to die, confessed her feelings to Shinichi in a surprisingly direct and unmistakable way… and somehow, it ended up being brushed aside again.

Movie 9 (2005): Strategy Above the Depths

A murder takes place aboard the luxury liner Aphrodite, and Conan soon discovers that the case is connected to a maritime disaster that happened fifteen years earlier. While Conan works to uncover the truth, Kogoro also surprises everyone with some remarkably sharp detective work.

This movie definitely reminded me of Titanic. Of course, it didn’t help that Ran took a game of hide-and-seek with some kids a little too seriously…

What really stood out to me, though, was how much attention Kogoro got in this movie. Even when he faced the female culprit one-on-one, he never once threw a punch. Instead, he kept blocking her attacks and patiently endured them. In the end, he brought her down with a clean shoulder throw.

I guess he really did have a personal rule: never hit a woman.

…Personally, though, I’d make an exception for criminals, Kogoro.

The biggest highlight of the movie, though, had to be the bracelet made by a group of elementary school kids somehow supporting Conan’s weight while he was falling!

Apparently, those kids accidentally invented a bracelet with the strength of a climbing rope—or even some kind of high-tech material developed by NASA!

Movie 10 (2006): The Private Eyes’ Requiem

Kogoro and Conan accept a mysterious client’s invitation, only to discover that Ran and the others have been taken hostage. With a strict time limit to solve the case, Conan teams up with Heiji as Kaito Kid also becomes involved in the mystery.

Kogoro… maybe stop accepting sketchy invitations without asking a few more questions first. You always end up getting dragged into another case anyway.

Even after Conan tells Haibara that the ID bracelets are rigged to explode, she barely reacts. Classic Haibara.

To keep Ran and the others from leaving the amusement park, she pretends to feel sick and softly asks, “Will you stay here with me…?” Then, the moment everyone falls for it, she mutters to herself, ”…Honestly… that was exhausting.” That little moment was absolutely priceless.

The “Hakuba” Conan and Heiji met at the university turned out to be Kid in disguise. To make the two of them trust him, he’d even quietly lifted Sonoko’s ID beforehand. Classic Kid.

I was especially impressed by the way he guided the students into giving him exactly the answers he wanted without making it obvious. That took some seriously smooth people skills.

Even after the case was solved and he returned Sonoko’s ID, he still managed to steal the spotlight by snatching Genta’s ID out of the air from a speeding roller coaster, neatly avoiding yet another disaster. Leave it to Kid to make the grand exit look effortless. ♪

But the moment that stayed with me the most was something much quieter.

While Conan and Heiji were desperately trying to solve the case in the control room, the children—completely unaware that their ID bracelets were actually bombs—had been gathered together in a restaurant.

With less than three minutes left before the explosion, Inspector Megure and Professor Agasa decided they couldn’t leave the children alone. Smiling as if nothing was wrong, they calmly walked into the room to stay with them.

Megure had told Inspector Shiratori to evacuate, but he came back anyway.

That scene reminded me that this movie wasn’t just about clever detectives—it was also about adults with remarkable courage and compassion.
