It seems that Detective Conan is quite popular outside Japan too!

In Japan, a new Conan movie is released every year around the middle of April. Since this tradition has continued for nearly 30 years, it has become something of a seasonal event for us♪

There was a time when I watched the TV anime regularly, but to be honest, I was always more of a Shinichi fan than a Conan fan Since Shinichi doesn’t appear very often, I ended up drifting away from the series fairly early on.

Even when the movies were shown on television, I was always a little curious about them. The problem was that back then, recording them just to watch later felt like too much trouble!

But this year, something dangerous happened…

Amazon Prime Video started offering all 28 theatrical films as part of its streaming library for members.

And with the newest movie currently in theaters, I couldn’t resist.

So, the Detective Conan Movie Marathon has officially begun!

I started watching them around Japan’s Golden Week holiday in May, and I’ve been having a lot of fun. There are plenty of moments that make me laugh, raise an eyebrow, or wonder, “Wait… what?!“♪

The latest movie will remain in theaters until around mid-July, so whether you’ve already watched the older films or are thinking about starting now, why not join me and enjoy a relaxed Conan movie marathon together? 🎶

And with that…

“Even though my body has shrunk, my mind remains the same. There is no mystery I cannot solve. I’m the great detective, and there is always only one truth!”

1997 – Movie #1: The Time-Bombed Skyscraper

After receiving an invitation from the famous architect Teiji Moriya, Conan becomes caught up in a series of bombings.

As he follows the clues and responds to the culprit’s challenges, he eventually discovers that the final target is Ran herself. With only minutes remaining before the last explosion, Conan faces an impossible choice.

Moriya’s obsession with symmetry was absolutely fascinating. His sense of aesthetics completely spiraled out of control, and somehow that made him even more memorable!

That said, I couldn’t help laughing at one particular scene. Ran had only just met this middle-aged architect, yet she suddenly started talking in detail about how “Shinichi likes the color red” despite nobody asking her about it.

The moment that happened, I immediately thought:

“Ah, so red is important. This has to be foreshadowing. There’s definitely going to be something involving the color red later on!”

It was a little too obvious!

In fact, while watching these movies, I’ve discovered a new game: spotting the moments that make you think, “Why are we suddenly talking about this right now?”

I was also surprised that Ran casually carried a sewing kit with her. Maybe it was a sign of the times? Nowadays, that’s a pretty rare level of preparedness!

And then there’s the climax.

Shinichi basically delivers the ultimate confession through a wall:

“If you’re going to die, then we’ll die together.”

How do you top that?

And yet, in the very next movie, their relationship somehow resets right back to the same childhood-friend status quo with almost no progress at all.

Why?!

1998 – Movie #2: The Fourteenth Target

People connected to Kogoro Mouri begin getting attacked one after another, with each victim corresponding to a number from a deck of playing cards.

As Conan investigates the culprit’s motives, the case escalates into a life-threatening incident centered around a floating ocean restaurant. The story also reveals an important part of Kogoro’s past.

The culprit in this movie was operating on an impressively large scale of misplaced resentment!

It was also nice to see a cooler side of Kogoro for a change. Beneath the goofy exterior, he occasionally reminds us that he was once a capable police detective.

But the real thing to remember from this movie is something else entirely.

Flying a helicopter? No problem.

Expert marksmanship? Of course.

Various skills that make you wonder, “Wait… are you secretly in the CIA?”

And thus began the legendary explanation that would appear again and again throughout the series:

“I learned it in Hawaii from my dad.”

Yes, this movie marks the birth of the famous “Hawaii Dad” legend!

Whenever Conan suddenly demonstrates an absurdly specific skill, there’s a good chance his father supposedly taught it to him during a trip to Hawaii. At some point, Hawaii starts sounding less like a vacation destination and more like a secret agent training academy.

Of course, the most famous scene may be when Ran gives Conan mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

And yet…

Even after nearly thirty years of movies and episodes, these two still haven’t managed a proper on-screen kiss scene.

At this point, that’s almost more impressive than solving crimes.

1999 – Movie #3: The Last Wizard of the Century

The story begins with a challenge from Kaito Kid, who has set his sights on a priceless treasure connected to the Romanov dynasty.

As Conan and his friends investigate the mystery surrounding the treasure, a series of murders occurs, turning the adventure into a fascinating blend of historical intrigue and detective mystery.

Kaito Kid finally makes his movie debut!

This time, he spends much of the story disguised as Inspector Shiratori, but my favorite moment was when he showed up to rescue Conan from a burning building. That was undeniably cool. ♬

Now, I can accept that Conan survives being shot because of one of Professor Agasa’s inventions. Fine.

But the house is literally on fire!

Stop solving riddles and get out of the building first! You can finish the investigation after you’ve escaped!

Looking back, there was also a clever piece of foreshadowing near the beginning of the movie.

While talking to Ran, Conan accidentally says that his birthday is May 4th—the same birthday as Shinichi.

Not exactly the smoothest cover-up.

At the time it seemed like a small mistake, but it was actually setting up Ran’s growing suspicion that Conan and Shinichi might be the same person.

And when Ran finally confronts Conan near the end, her eyes welling up with tears as she demands the truth…

Who arrives at exactly the right moment to save the day?

Kaito Kid, of course.

It was a wonderfully stylish entrance.

And yet, what I remember most is the contrast between Kid’s elegance and what happened afterward.

He makes a dramatic exit looking cool as ever…

and then somehow ends up surrounded by an absolutely ridiculous number of pigeons.

The gap between “mysterious gentleman thief” and “human pigeon magnet” made me laugh more than it probably should have. ♪

2000 – Movie #4: Captured in Her Eyes

A series of attacks targets police officers connected to an ongoing investigation.

After witnessing one of the incidents, Ran suffers a traumatic shock and loses her memory. When she, too, becomes a target, Conan must protect her while searching for the truth behind the case.

This movie is famous for Ran’s amnesia storyline.

One scene that made me laugh was when Ran looked at a photo of herself with Shinichi on her desk and asked who he was.

Kogoro’s answer?

“He’s the guy who’s been leading you astray.”

That was such a perfect dad response.

But honestly, Kogoro, the Kudo family is incredibly wealthy and successful.

If things work out, Ran is heading straight for a very comfortable future! ♪

We also return to Tropical Land, the amusement park where the entire story originally began.

By this point, Conan seems to know every corner of the park as if he’s been working there for twenty years.

Need directions?

Need an escape route?

Need detailed knowledge of the park’s facilities?

Conan already has the answer.

And naturally, thanks to the legendary “Hawaii Dad” training program, he can pilot a boat perfectly as well.

At this stage, the movies also seem to be leaning more heavily into action sequences.

The mysteries are still there, of course, but Conan is starting to spend almost as much time chasing suspects, driving vehicles, and surviving impossible situations as he is solving crimes.

Not that I’m complaining. ♬

And then there’s the unforgettable line from the climax:

“Because I love you. More than anyone else in the world.”

Incidentally, in the English version, Shinichi’s “omee” simply becomes “you.”

Which is understandable, of course.

Personally, if an adult man called me “omae”in real life, I’d probably keep my distance.

But Shinichi is different.

There’s something about the way he says it that feels perfectly in character—rough around the edges, a little awkward, not especially romantic on the surface, and yet full of genuine affection.

It sounds exactly like something a teenage boy like Shinichi would say.

The problem is that once you translate it into another language, much of that nuance disappears.

“You” is just… you.

No matter who says it.

One of the challenges of translation is that it can convey the meaning perfectly while still losing some of the personality hidden inside the original words.

So if you really want to experience Japanese anime at its fullest…

learn Japanese!

The Conan Movie Marathon continues! ⭐︎
