2022 – Movie 25: The Bride of Halloween
During a mock wedding ceremony in Shibuya, Detective Takagi is injured when a violent intruder crashes the event. Around the same time, the criminal behind a bombing incident three years earlier escapes from prison. After hearing the story of Rei Furuya, who has been fitted with a bomb collar, Conan sets out to track down an unidentified bomber known as “Plamya.”
I actually quite like this movie, but the title was a letdown!
It starts with one of those classic Detective Conan fake-outs: the wedding of Detectives Sato and Takagi, which gets us all excited, turns out to be just a mock ceremony!
So, when you hear “the bride,” there’s really only one woman who comes to mind later in the story: the French woman. I suspected her from the very beginning. Her male counterpart also struck me as the kind of guy who could easily fall for a romance scam. (LOL)
It was such a shame that the title practically gave away who the culprit was going to be!
In The Darkest Nightmare, Kazami struck me as rather unpleasant. But from Zero the Enforcer onward, we started seeing his weaknesses and inner struggles. And in this movie, he has become Amuro’s complete errand boy, to the point that I’ve actually grown rather fond of him! ♪
Even with a bomb collar around his neck, Amuro was relaxed enough to enjoy a drink. And when he sent Conan off to deal with the case he had called him in to help solve, he said, “Good luck!”
Talk about acting like it’s none of his business!
“Good luck” is generally used to encourage someone who is about to take on a challenge of their own, whether it’s taking an exam, competing in a match, or facing an opponent. You’re wishing them success as they put their skills to the test.
So, using it when someone is doing a job or favor at your request sounds rather unnatural. I thought I’d be pretty annoyed if someone said that to me! When you ask someone to do something for you, there’s a way to put it, isn’t there? That line just didn’t sit right with me.
But hey, this is Amuro we’re talking about! ♪ He must have been feeling like he was in Mission: Impossible. As a top-ranking Public Security officer, he was putting on that cool, superior attitude, like a director giving Ethan Hunt his mission with a casual “Good luck!”
Mind you, Conan would probably have jumped at the case even without being asked. Still, the way “Good luck” is used in this scene is a little off from its usual meaning, so keep that in mind when you use it yourself!
2023 – Movie 26: Black Iron Submarine
A new system called Pacific Buoy, an offshore facility near Hachijo-jima, begins testing a cutting-edge technology that connects security cameras from around the world. But the Black Organization is lurking in the shadows. Conan and his friends must face a desperate underwater battle and a growing threat that could expose Haibara Ai’s true identity.
As a devoted Haibara fan, my reaction after watching this movie was simple:
“Haibara, you’re amazing!”
Muttering, “You idiot!” she jumps right back into the sea on an underwater scooter to save Conan. Seeing her act so impulsively, throwing caution to the wind in a way that’s so unlike her, really got to me.
But WHY?! WHY, OH WHY?! Why did she give Conan’s kiss back to Ran?!
Conan was unconscious anyway, so he probably wouldn’t even remember it! Girl, just keep that memory for yourself! I don’t know why, but I can practically hear myself saying this in the voice of a sassy gay bar mom. LOL.
Haibara knows that the Organization has discovered she’s still alive in her shrunken form, so she sadly tells Conan that she can no longer stay with him, Professor Agasa, and the others.
Then Conan says:
“Don’t look at me like that. I told you, didn’t I? I’ll figure something out for you, no matter what!”
Even a completely vague promise like “I’ll figure something out” is enough to make me believe him. Honestly, Shinichi (Conan) might be the only person in the world I’d trust that much.
Vermouth disguised herself as Haibara and appeared on security cameras in various locations, making Gin realize that the facial recognition system was a “piece of crap.” LOL.
Gin kept grumbling about the “crappy system,” and I found myself increasingly amused every time he spat out the word kuso (“crap” or “damn”).
This is a bit (okay, quite a bit) vulgar, but I think it’s useful to understand this expression in everyday Japanese, so let me explain how kuso- is used as a prefix! ♪
In expressions like Gin’s kuso shisutemu (“crappy system”), kuso- is a prefix added to the beginning of a word to express strong irritation or anger, or to intensify its meaning.
Unlike words such as chō (“super” or “extremely”) and meccha (“really” or “very”), kuso- is generally used with negative words and gives them an even more negative, harsh, or contemptuous tone.
Here are some common examples:
Kuso- + adjective
- kuso atsui — freaking hot
- kuso mazui — freaking disgusting (when talking about food)
- kuso isogashii — insanely busy
Kuso- + adjectival noun
- kuso mendō — a massive pain in the ass
- kuso namaiki — ridiculously cheeky / obnoxious
Kuso- + noun
- kuso gaki — little brat
- kuso jiji — old bastard
So, as a general rule, let’s sum it up like this:
- Kuso- + adjective or adjectival noun: intensification
- Kuso- + noun: insult or verbal abuse
Now, not just any noun can naturally follow kuso-. It sounds much more natural when the noun itself already carries a rough, disrespectful, or derogatory tone.
For example:
- kuso gaki → ◎
- kuso kodomo → ✖️
- kuso jiji → ◎
- kuso ojīsan → ✖️
- kuso yarō → ◎
- kuso dansei → ✖️
In other words, kuso- works especially well when you attach it to a word that is already insulting or derogatory, making the insult even stronger.
That’s why kuso- sounds rather unnatural when you attach it to a neutral word.
When Gin yells, “Kuso shisutemu ga!” (“This damn system!”), he is basically hurling abuse at the neutral, technical term shisutemu (“system”). It almost feels as if the system itself is being unfairly blamed for everything! ♪
Grammatically, there’s nothing wrong with the expression. But I found it hilarious that Gin chose to attach kuso- to shisutemu of all words. It’s an unusual combination compared with the more typical kuso- expressions, and that little mismatch is what makes it so funny to me. LOL.
And then the Pacific Buoy facility itself was blown up just days after opening, along with the “damn system” and all! Yikes.
This is a very rough, colloquial expression, so it’s best reserved for casual conversations among close friends. I wouldn’t recommend using it yourself, but it’s definitely one of those expressions worth understanding when you hear it!
Pinga, who had discovered Conan’s true identity, was also discarded by Gin and went down with the exploding submarine. And they all lived happily ever after!
Just two more movies to go before I reach the finish line of my Detective Conan movie marathon!
Amazon Prime Video stopped streaming the movies at the end of August, so I actually finished watching them quite some time ago. But there’s something I realized at the very end of this marathon…
I’ll save that thought for my next marathon post. ⭐︎
